Ahh! This week is my birthday and I wish for some very lofty things. And every one of my wishes has a relationship to money.
Just to name a few, I wish:
• For world peace.
• For poverty to perish.
• For hunger to be a thing of the past.
• For everybody to be able to read and write.
• For governments to spend less than what they tax.
• For children not to suffer through their parent’s divorces.
• For people not to be financially ruined by the continuing stock market collapse.
Today I read on Facebook that this is National Book Week. And although I have lofty wishes for the world, my friends and my family, I know that many of my wishes will never become reality unless I begin to act upon those wishes.
In the past I have written about how each individual doing what she/he only can do will make the world a better place for all. I believe that completely. Simply promising the world a better tomorrow by borrowing from that tomorrow for today will never succeed in making the world a better place. That is historically what governments have always done.
The United States is no different. The US now has $75 trillion worth of promises which they have made to others for tomorrow. Yet the US government has already spent all the money which was supposed to meet all those promises. In fact they have spent $2.1 trillion more than that! $2.7 trillion of those dollars were spent between 2008 and 2010. The United States Congress is totally responsible for this spending. It alone has the constitutional authority to authorize spending. So this is a bipartisan issue not a presidential issue or a particular party issue.
Last week this same irresponsible congress increased the amount of money the government could spend by $900 billion dollars. Then promptly, over the next 24 hours, allowed spending to eat up nearly two-thirds of that credit limit. What craziness!
So what can you and I possibly do about this craziness?
One phone caller today said that the 500+ drop in the stock market last Thursday didn’t really bother him as he was in a “buy and hold pattern” and he believes the market will recover over time. But what about all those folks that have contributed to 529 Plans and need those funds to pay for their child’s college tuition next week? Waiting for the market to come back isn’t an option for them regardless of what they “believe!” In fact to put it very bluntly this isn’t about religion it’s about money so I don’t care if people believe in the stock market. I’m much more interested in what really works not what I believe or what someone else believes might happen. And that is why I specialize.
Here’s one of my client’s emails to me last Friday after the market had its biggest correction since 2008 on Thursday.
• “I love it, the market collapse 500 points and I’m still making money!”
As I write this blog on Monday August 8, 2011 the stock market is crashing again, down 635 so far. But you know what? All of our clients who follow our coaching advice are still making money and not losing it!
So what is so uniquely different about what we do here at Life Benefits, Inc?
